First up, an apology. I have rather neglected my duties here. I could make excuses but I am simply not going to.

As promised over on Bluesky, as #DDAY80GB comes to an end, I would announce a new group build. It is something I have wanted to bring to the party since I was first introduced to the whole concept of building along a common theme with other modellers.

As modellers we do tend to stick with the mainstream WW2 European Theatre. I appreciate this is a gross over-simplification, but it is true nonetheless.

Time to breakout. Outside of my Ugandan Army Airforce MiG-21 and Angolan Air Force Su-22, when did you see an African badged build? Or built one yourself?

So here it is #AfricaGB starting on 1st July ending 31st August 2024.

Rules:

Anything used by an independent African nation, wearing it’s own independent markings and insignia. So no Panzer IIIs from the Afrika Corps, no pre-independence RAF East Africa Catalinas and no what ifs. That’s it. That’s the one rule. Any scale, any subject that fits the only rule.

For those of you that enjoy the research and sourcing part of the hobby, this will be right up your street. For Cold War Junkies, this will be right up your street. For fans of unusual or garish colour schemes, this will be right up your street.

Now I am very aware that there will be very few kits that you will be able to build out of the box. Aftermarket will be neccesary, and you might not be able to (actually almost certainly won’t) source precise serial numbers. I won’t be checking that. Just don’t slap Burkino Faso roundels on a Spitfire, and tell me that’s fine.

I do have a small stash of African roundels in 48 and 72, so should you get stuck I may be able to help.

Feel free to ask any questions either by the reply function here or on whatever social media platform you see this blog posted.

Please join in, and most of all……HAVE FUN.
